POLICE are hunting a pair of bumbling caravan thieves who were so keen to make their getaway that they sped across an intersection, crashed through a fence and knocked a house from its foundations.

The Keystone crooks were seen by the caravan's owner as they hooked his van onto the back of a car outside his Gillies Street, Kurri Kurri, address about 2am yesterday.

They sped off, failing to stop at the intersection of Aberdare Street, instead careering into the front yard of a family house and crashing into a bedroom.

Luke Gilmour, 18, was asleep when the car crashed into the wall beside his bed but incredibly escaped physical injury.

His mother, Jody Knight, and her partner, Grant Hetherington, were woken by the crash.

"We woke up to a bang and a lot of yelling and ran outside to see the car inside Luke's room," Ms Knight said.

"We ran back inside to check he was OK and by the time we went back outside they were gone."

The crash has caused extensive damage to Ms Knight's house and insurance assessors have been called.

"The engine actually finished up underneath Luke's bed, and the tree stump that slowed the car's progress probably saved his life," Ms Knight said.
